Cantoboard: A Feature-Rich Cantonese Input Method for iPhone
Cantoboard is a free utility and tools application developed by Tsz Hin Man for iPhone users. It offers a Cantonese input method that is on par with the built-in iOS keyboard. With an offline input engine, users can rest assured that no information is collected by any server.
Cantoboard adopts the Cantonese Romanization Scheme developed by the Linguistic Society of Hong Kong (LSHK). It also provides Yale-compatible mode, enabling users to input tones and construct sentences or phrases seamlessly. For users unfamiliar with Romanization, Cantoboard offers additional input methods such as Cangjie, Quick, Stroke, and Mandarin Pinyin lookup.
One of the advantages of Cantoboard over other keyboards is its learning mode, allowing users to improve their Cantonese input skills while using Cangjie, Quick, Stroke, or Mandarin Pinyin methods. It also distinguishes itself from Kaiboard by offering a Cantonese mode with learning and intelligent features, including tone reduction and candidate word arrangement based on radicals or strokes. Furthermore, Cantoboard ensures a seamless typing experience by separating Cantonese Romanization and Yale input modes.
Compared to iOS Gboard, Cantoboard excels with its accurate Cantonese input and tone reduction capabilities. Gboard often generates nonsensical candidate words due to its mixed and fuzzy Pinyin input, and it lacks the ability to reduce repetitive characters.
For English input, Cantoboard adopts a layout similar to the iOS system keyboard. Double-tapping the spacebar automatically inserts a period, and it intelligently detects the font size.
Cantoboard provides intelligent input and error correction for both Chinese and English. Punctuation marks are automatically adjusted to half-width or full-width based on the context.
